ALONG THE TISZA RIVER BY BOAT

The arboretum's environs can be explored by water as well as on foot, and visitors are welcomed to join our boat tours along the River Tisza (English and/or German-speaking guides are available upon in advance notice). Our small 12 person motorboat departs from a small landing just a five minute walk from the arboretum's center. The tour, lasting 30 minutes to an hour covers a 5-20 km section of the river and passes by bird-reach gallery forests, before returning to the same landing. THE MIRACLE OF THE DAYFLIES

Watching the annual miracle of the mayfly or dayfly swarms above theTisza River is one of the amazing bonuses of a visit to the arboretum in mid-summer. Usually in June, billions of tiny, ephemeral insects (Palingenia longicauda) emerge from the water to perform their brief mating dance above the flow before they are once again united with the silk-sheened water. Generally, this swarming takes place over the course of a week. The peak in 2007 was on June 11 and it left our awed visitors with unforgottable memories.

HORSEBACK RIDING

For those who like horseback riding, this is a place to enjoy endless roaming in space and time. One can rent a horse or take riding lessons at the "Vaspatkó Udvar" ("Iron Horseshoe Yard") in the nearby village of Nagyrév. In general, renters will be provided - with a guide. Those who wish to ride alone must first prove their ability to handle their chosen horse with skill.

ACTIVITIES AT THE NEARBY VILLAGE OF NAGYRÉV

The Tiszakürt Arboretum is only 12 km from Nagyrév where accomodations are available and visitors can take part in many holiday sports and activities. You can bicycle along the levee that borders the Tisza. It is in a nature conservation area and includes heron habitat. Nearby are 40 acre of forest that belong to the village of Nagyrév and offer excellent hunting grounds. The "Kecsege House" is just a two or three minute walk from the Tisza, where the fishing is rewarding. The billabong/oxbow lake formed by the Tisza is 2 km from the house, and there you can rent a boat for a pleasure outing. Organized boat trips are offered during the week (usually in June) when the Tisza mayflies swarm. In addition, after all your activities you can refresh yourself in the medicinal waters of the nearby spas in Tiszaföldvár and Cserkeszőlő or take a swim in the Tisza. The Tisza's water is among the cleanest of the main plain-rivers of Europe.

GEOGRAPHICAL MUSEUM OF TISZAZUG

You can visit exhibitions of natural science, paleontology, ethnography. You can admire archaeological finds from the Stone Age and the Brazen Age, different maps and photos of the Tiszazug.
